I got rid of my dresser set because it's heavy to move when you're moving a lot. I got this and I'm pleased with the look and portability for my clothes and misc stuff. It's sturdy enough for this use and I guess a few hard cover books could work per cube, there's a little flex to the shelf so I wouldn't go too heavy.
